• New Year Message 2013

    Kia ora.  Nga mihi o te tau hou.   New Year greetings to you all.

    Marking anniversaries like the New Year is central to understanding our place in the world, and the events that have shaped our lives.  Anniversaries can be times to celebrate past glories and successes, or to reflect on the meaning of tragedies and losses.  

  • New Year Honours 2013

    Nine New Zealanders have been made Knights or Dames Companion in the 2013 New Year Honours list announced today.  The list recognises the achievements and contributions of 191 people.

    A highlight of the celebration for His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales' birthday was the cake created by the Head Chef at Government House, Simon Peacock.

    The birthday cake consisted of 64 smaller cakes which were assembled into a single one metre by one metre cake.  As it was a Kiwi-themed birthday party, each individual cake was decorated with one of 16 iconic New Zealand images.

  • Diamond Jubilee visit

    The Diamond Jubilee Royal Visit to New Zealand by Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, began on November 10.

    The Royal couple will visit Auckland, Wellington, Feilding, Palmerston North and Christchurch before heading flying to Britain on November 16.

  • Royal reception

    The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall hosted a reception for prominent New Zealanders, Australians and Papua New Guineans living in the UK, on 24 October, ahead of their upcoming tour.

    The reception at St James' Palace was attended by around 200 guests including: Dame Kiri te Kanawa, Hayley Westenra, Sean Fitzpatrick, Anton Oliver, and world renowned chefs Peter Gordon and Anna Hansen.

  • New Zealand's Governor-General

    Government House has published a new booklet about the role of the Governor-General of New Zealand.

    New Zealand's Governor-General briefly outlines the history and constitutional responsibilities of the Governor-General, and the international, ceremonial and community leadership activities of the Office.

  • 2012 London Olympic Games

    The Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, and Lady Janine Mateparae travelled to London to support the New Zealand team at the 30th Olympiad.

    While in London from 26-31 July, the Governor-General and Lady Janine Mateparae attended the Opening Ceremony and meet New Zealand athletes at a number of events.

  • Diamond Jubilee message

    As the sun sets on Monday, more than 4,000 beacons throughout the world will be lit to mark the Diamond Jubilee of our Queen and Head of State, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.    As the sun sets here on the day we officially mark the Queen’s birthday, those lit in New Zealand will be among the first to mark this momentous occasion.

  • Open to view - credentials ceremonies

    Credentials ceremonies are an important part of the constitutional and ceremonial duties of the Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae. 

    Credentials are a letter from an Ambassador or High Commissioner’s Head of State appointing them as their diplomatic representative and Heads of Mission designate present their credentials to Sir Jerry Mateparae at ceremonies held at Government House throughout the year.

  • Western Bay of Plenty regional visit

    The Governor-General of New Zealand, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, undertook a four day visit to the Western Bay of Plenty region from 13 - 16 March 2012.

    Sir Jerry Mateparae began the visit by officially opening the Tauranga Riding for the Disabled Indoor Arena, Te Maru o Ngāti Pukenga, and was formally welcomed to the region by the Tauranga Moana Iwi at Maungatapu Marae.

    The four-day programme included visits to the Rena Incident Control Centre, Mount Maunganui College, a kiwifruit orchard in Paengaroa and the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.


Tours of Government House Wellington for the public, schools and community groups are being offered, starting in the New Visitor Centre.
