Governor of New Zealand
1880 - 1882
Sir Arthur was born in 1829 and graduated with an MA from Cambridge in 1851. A year later he became secretary to his father who was Prime Minister 1852-55. Sir Arthur was a Liberal MP 1854-57.
His governorships, apart from New Zealand, included New Brunswick, Trinidad, Mauritius and Ceylon. He was the 1st High Commissioner to the Western Pacific 1877-82.
He was raised to the peerage in 1893 as Baron Stanmore. He did literary and public work in his retirement and was a member of various House of Lords committees.
He died in 1912.
