Jim James, of Hamilton, received the Queen's Service Medal for services to orchid growing. He was a foundation member of the Waikato Orchid Society in 1959, was a member of the Orchid Council of New Zealand in 1978, and a member of the American Orchid Society. He has an international reputation as a cultivator of orchid hybrids and has attended and lectured at many international events. Mr James has written The New Zealand Orchid Grower, The New Zealand Orchid Growers Handbook, Growing Orchids in New Zealand, and Orchids, as well as contributing many articles to specialist journals.
