Main Hallway

The main hallway runs the length of Government House Wellington and contains a host of paintings, photographs and other treasures related to New Zealand and the history of the building.

Hallway clock

This case clock was made in Scotland in the 18th Century.

This painting of Wellingtonian by Sir Peter Siddell was donated to Government House by Governor-General Dame Catherine Tizard (1990-96).

Display cases

In the eastern end of the Main Hallway, are two display cases of gifts given to the Governor-General and Government House by visiting Heads of State and Ambassadors.  One case includes Maori artefacts given to the late Sir Paul Reeves (1985-90) as well as the ceremonial mere, Te Raupatu, given by Tainui to mark the tribe's treaty settlement with the Crown.

Main Hallway photographs

A feature of the western end of the Main Hallway are the photographs of Governors and Governors-General who have served in New Zealand since 1840.  Pictured from left are: Sir George Bowen (1868-73); Rt Hon Sir James Fergusson (1873-74) and Marquess of Normanby (1875-70).  The chair is one of 38 tapestry chairs created by members of the then Country Women's Institutes to mark the planned visit of King George VI.

Radiator and lincrusta

The refurbished radiators in the Hall and throughout the public rooms are part of the original house fittings.  Behind the radiator is the imitation lincrusta modelled on a small segment of the original that remained within the House.  The new lincrusta is made from plastic.
