Hon Sir Grant Hammond, Wellington, KNZM

For services to the law. Justice Hammond was appointed as a High Court Judge in 1992 and as a Judge of the Court of Appeal in 2004. He practised in Auckland as a partner in Wiseman and Hammond, then as a litigation partner in Hamilton for Tompkins Wake and Co. He became a Professor of Law at Dalhousie University and the University of Alberta in Canada and was appointed head of the Alberta Law Reform Commission. In 1989 he returned to Auckland and was appointed a Professor of Law at the University of Auckland and subsequently became Dean of Law.

Christopher Doig, Christchurch, CNZM

For services to the arts and sport. Mr Doig has been a pre-eminent international opera singer, and was the Director of the International Festival of the Arts from 1992 to 1995, Chief Executive Officer of New Zealand Cricket from 1995 to 2001, and Chair of Creative New Zealand. He was Deputy Chair of Sport and Recreation New Zealand and is on the boards of the New Zealand Rugby Union, Rowing New Zealand, the Winter Games Trust and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Foundation.

Roger Kerr, Wellington, CNZM

For services to business. Mr Kerr became the founding Executive Director of the New Zealand Business Roundtable, a public policy think tank, in 1986 and has held this position for 25 years. Under Mr Kerr’s leadership, the Business Roundtable has achieved a domestic and international reputation for the quality of its research, its principles and arguments. The Roundtable organises the prestigious annual Sir Ron Trotter Lecture, which attracts many top international experts every year.

Carol Moffatt, Kaiapoi, QSO

For services to education. Mrs Moffatt spent 41 years in education as a teacher, secondary school inspector, and Principal. From 1998 to 2003 she was the manager of the first ICT strategy for schools for the Ministry of Education. This project involved many initiatives, including ICT professional development for teachers, Laptops for Teachers, and Project PROBE – encouraging broadband coverage to all of New Zealand. From 2003 she worked on the Early Childhood Education ICT Framework, which was launched in April 2006.

Dr John Hellstrom, Picton, ONZM

For services to biosecurity. For more than 20 years Dr Hellstrom has worked to establish and maintain high standards of animal welfare in New Zealand, with a strong awareness of its importance for New Zealand’s international trade. Dr Hellstrom was Chief Veterinary Officer from 1986 to 1991 for the then Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and was pivotal in restructuring the state veterinary service, and upgrading and integrating New Zealand’s biosecurity systems.

John Turner, Lumsden, ONZM

For services to the meat industry. Mr Turner was Chair of the Alliance Group from 1998 to 2007, and Director from 1987 to 2007. He guided the company in a weak financial position to become the world’s largest sheep meat processor and marketer, with a turnover of more than $1 billion. He has been a strong advocate for the co-operative principles of ownership, allowing farmers to become involved in the meat industry, encouraging them to become knowledgeable about the end-users of their products.

Jenny Harper, Christchurch, MNZM

For services to the arts. Ms Harper has been Director of the Christchurch Art Gallery since 2006, and represents the Gallery nationally and internationally. Before this, she worked at Victoria University of Wellington, developing the Art History programme, and, from 2000, was head of Art History, Classics and Religious Studies. In 2003, she was appointed to the role of Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic). She was Director of the former National Art Gallery in Wellington, becoming Director of Art and History at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa after a legislative change in 1992.

Gregory Jenks, Tauranga, MNZM

For services to conservation. Mr Jenks is recognised as a leading dune ecologist who develops low cost, community-based, successful techniques to maximise dune restoration. He was instrumental in the formation of the Dune Restoration Trust and has been responsible for organising the planting of sand binding plants on the Bay of Plenty dunes, and now also further afield.

Ivan Sutherland, Blenheim, MNZM,

For services to rowing and viticulture. Mr Sutherland was elected as Chair of Rowing New Zealand in 2010 and is President of the Wairau Rowing Club. He is Chair of the Marlborough Research Centre Board, which runs the Marlborough Wine Research Centre in Blenheim. He was a bronze medal-winning rower in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and managed the New Zealand rowing team for the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He was a national rowing selector for 12 years, has been an active rowing coach and was on the Karapiro 2010 Board for the World Rowing Championships.

Roger Taylor, Nelson, MNZM

For services to the arts. Mr Taylor has been a member of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra board since August 2006. He is a board member and was the President of Chamber Music New Zealand from 1991 to 2001. He was Deputy Chair of the Royal New Zealand Ballet from 1994 to 2000. He is also on the Victoria University Council, the Correspondence School board and the Adam Chamber Music Festival board in Nelson. Mr Taylor is a chartered accountant and has a wide range of governance experience on public and private boards.
