This section of the Governor-General's website contains educational resources for use by teachers in New Zealand primary and secondary schools. There is no charge to use them.
Based on the social studies component of the 2007 National Curriculum, one unit has been developed for Level 4 (senior primary level) and the other at Level 5 (junior secondary level). Both were developed by teachers in consultation with Government House.
In addition to these resources, several other agencies have prepared educational resources on New Zealand's system of government. They include:
The Level 4 unit explores how the Governor-General is appointed, what skills are required for this leadership position, what roles he or she undertakes and the consequences of his or her leadership on New Zealand society and local communities.
The Level 5 unit explores the key concept of constitutional monarchy within a New Zealand context. It provides the opportunity for students to investigate the Governor-General's role within this system of government as well as gaining an understanding as to how a Governor-General is appointed and the other roles he or she undertakes. Students are then able to compare and contrast the role of the Governor-General in New Zealand's system with other democracies.
