Management of Government House

Government House is managed by a small management team headed by the Official Secretary.

The Official Secretary is a member of Senior Management Group of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and reports to the Clerk of the Executive Council.

The Official Secretary is Gregory Baughen. Greg has been the Official Secretary to the Governor-General since Christmas 2014. In this role, Greg is the Governor-General’s adviser on the ceremonial, community and international parts of the vice-regal office. He is responsible for supporting the Governor-General’s programme and the staffing at Government House. He is also accountable for the operations of the household and the physical fabric of the buildings, grounds and art works at the Wellington and Auckland houses. Greg came to the role after a lengthy period working in New Zealand’s intelligence community, mainly with the National Assessments Bureau, where he was the director from 2006 to 2013. Originally from Dunedin, he has degrees in Arts, Strategic Studies and Public Administration.
