He Rā Rākau Tītapu – King Charles III Coronation Plantings

On the weekend of 6 and 7 May, local councils across New Zealand planted native trees as part of He Rā Rākau Tītapu – King Charles III Coronation Plantings.

A national event was held at the Auckland Domain, on the lawn beneath Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum, at 1pm on Sunday 7 May. The public were invited to the family-friendly celebration with performances, free ice cream and sapling giveaways.

Coronation illuminations

Buildings and landmarks across Aotearoa New Zealand were lit up in purple lights over the Coronation weekend. Below is a selection of locations.

Other towns, including Dunedin, Hawera and Gore, also had illuminations over the weekend.

Gun salutes

The New Zealand Defence Force fired gun salutes from Devonport and Point Jerningham, Wellington, at midday on Sunday 7 May to acknowledge the Coronation.

Auckland Holy Trinity Cathedral Coronation Celebration

A service in Auckland celebrating the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III will take place at the Holy Trinity Cathedral at 5pm on Sunday 7 May. The service is being organised by the Cathedral and Auckland City Council.

A Coronation Sing-in!

Waiapu Cathedral of St John the Evangelist in Napier celebrates the coronation of King Charles III with a right royal sing-in on Saturday 29 April, including grand anthems and hymns sung at previous coronations of British Kings and Queens.

Coronation Celebration at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts 

The Academy has invited artists to submit fine artworks for this special exhibition to mark the Coronation and continue a long tradition of artists commemorating moments in history. On show in Wellington from 21 April to 21 May 2023.

South Taranaki LibraryPlus Coronation events

Visit the Eltham, Kaponga, Hawera or Pātea LibraryPlus locations between 1-6 May for a range of Coronation events. Activities include high teas, Craft a Crown, story time, and a 'Remembering the Royals' Senior Hour.
