The Insignia and Medals awarded at the investiture ceremony on 30 August 2012. Top left is the Insignia of a Member of the Order of New Zealand awarded to Dame Malvina Major. Unique among New Zealand Royal honours, the Insignia must be returned when the holder dies. Dame Malvina was awarded the Insignia previously held by New Zealand author, the late Janet Frame.
