Dr Matteo de Nora, Monaco, CNZM, for services to yachting and medicine
Mr de Nora has provided financial support for Emirates Team New Zealand’s America’s Cup campaign and for medical research in neurology. He has also contributed significantly to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. He has almost entirely funded the existence of Emirates Team New Zealand since 2007. Through this support, the team has been able to retain key members from the previous America’s Cup campaign. This has led to the growth of an enterprise that has ignited sailing projects such as winning the TP 52 Audi Med Cups, winning the Louis Vuitton Trophy and the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12. Mr de Nora also funds a fellowship for research into a cure for tinnitus, as well as supporting the neurology research unit at the University of Auckland. In addition, he provided assistance for the Conrad family of Waitangi – arranging for a world-leading paediatrician and rheumatologist to come to New Zealand to examine the family’s daughter, who has connective tissue disease. While in New Zealand, the doctor was also able to see six other ‘difficult case’ patients at Starship Hospital, and held a national teleconference for New Zealand doctors.
