Alan McQuarters, Ashburton, QSM, for services to the community
Mr Alan McQuarters has been involved in community service to Ashburton in many forms for 60 years. He was a member of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade from 1954 to 1979. He has since assisted the Fire Brigade as Station Keeper for 22 years, and assists in maintaining the Brigade’s museum. He was awarded the United Fire Brigades' Association of New Zealand Gold Star and made a life member of the Ashburton Brigade. He has been a member of the Ashburton Savage Club for over 65 years, and helped to establish the Plains Ashburton Rotary Club. He has been playing in the Ashburton Silver Band for 30 years and is a foundation member of the Ashburton Operatic Society. Mr McQuarters was a very dedicated member of a small team instrumental in the building of the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. He is a past President of the Ashburton Retailers’ Association. Mr McQuarters has received numerous awards including the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 2009.
