Patrick Cotter
Patrick Cotter, of Christchurch, received the Insignia of an Officer of The New Zealand Order of Merit for services to medicine. Mr Cotter has contributed to the field of medicine and surgery in Christchurch and nationally for more than 50 years. He founded the surgeons’ and anaesthetists’ instrument pool, which organised the equipment for operations in private hospitals, and remained as the organiser until his retirement. He has contributed to the governance of the New Zealand Medical Association as a member of the Canterbury Committee and a delegate to the Central Education Committee. He served on the New Zealand Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Court of Examiners. He was a member of the Canterbury Medical Library Committee for 30 years. He was involved in the establishment of the new Christchurch Clinical School of Medicine and began the Cotter Medical History Trust in 1998. Since his retirement, Mr Cotter was Superintendent of the Mary Potter Hospice for 10 years.
