Shirley Spurr
Shirley Spurr, of Waihi, received the Queen's Service Medal at an investiture ceremony on 26 September 2008. She has been the secretary/treasurer of the Waihi Community Marae and led the building of a new marae complex in the 1980s, the completion of the wharekai in 1990, the wharenui in 1999, and the manuhuri shelter in 2006. She also assisted government agencies through the provision of marae-based training opportunities. She was secretary of the Waihi Girl Guides Association for 15 years and is considered the unofficial Citizen’s Advice Bureau in Waihi. Mrs Spurr received a Hauraki District Council Citizen’s Award in 2006.
