Allan Reid
Allan Reid, of Christchurch, received the Queen's Service Medal for services to shearing. Mr Reid was one of the main employers in the Rangiora area in the 1960s and 1970s through his company Allan Reid Shearing and Building. He often employed up to 50 people, shearing in the summer and building in the winter. He displayed strong skills in professional development, encouraging employees to improve their skills through entering shearing competitions. His shearing gang had a reputation as being one of the best in Canterbury, with many farmers reaping the rewards through the excellent presentation of their clip for sale. He was also involved in spending many volunteer hours establishing shearing competitions and donating materials and builders to construct buildings for the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Since retiring, Mr Reid has continued to mentor New Zealand shearers and regularly travels to South Africa to teach black South African shearers.
