Roger Bright
Senior Constable Roger Bright received the New Zealand Bravery Medal for rescuing a man who attempted to gas himself at his Great Barrier Island home on 4 January 2006. He broke into the man’s house with an axe and, despite being hit by a wall of gas fumes, dragged the solidly built man outside to safety before summoning emergency medical assistance. He displayed quick thinking and bravery in order to save a life, when he entered, without hesitation, a life threatening situation knowing that further police and medical assistance were not immediately available. Senior Sergeant Allan Stewart also received the New Zealand Bravery Medal for negotiating the release of a group of United Nations staff on 10 November 2006 whilst posted in Timor-Leste.
