Nolan Raihania, Tokomaru Bay, ONZM
For services to Māori. Mr Raihania became the National President of the 28th Māori Battalion Association in 2008. He served in the Māori Battalion C Company in 1944. He was a Mataura Borough councillor from 1968 to 1978. He helped establish the Mataura Māori Club, which raised money for the Māori Education Foundation and went on to compete in many national competitions. He was a member of the South Island Māori Committee and was instrumental in the building of the Mataura Marae in 1984. He also helped rebuild the Waiparapara Marae on the East Coast after he returned there to live. Mr Raihana instigated the return of two Tauwhareparae land blocks in 1993 and 1994, and pioneered one of the first big organic operations on the East Coast, growing organic sweet corn for Watties. Mr Raihania has been a Justice of the Peace since 1978, a Te Runanga o Ngati Porou trustee for many terms, a member of the United Sports Club in Tokomaru Bay and the Gisborne RSA.
