Michael Horton, of Remuera
Michael Horton received the Insignia of a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to philanthropy. Mr Horton is Chairperson of Horton Media Limited, which he established in 1997 and focuses on printing community newspapers, many for ethnic groups, in New Zealand and Australia. He is well known for his involvement in Wilson and Horton Ltd, publisher of The New Zealand Herald, of which he was Managing Director from 1972 to 1995. He has served on many newspaper industry boards, including the New Zealand Press Association and the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, and was a founder of Triangle Television in Auckland, first and largest non-commercial community-based television channel in the country. He has been on the board of the Auckland division of the Cancer Society and chaired its finance committee. His philanthropic activities extend to many organisations including the Rotary Club and the Robert Horton Memorial Trust. He is Chair of the Cornwall Park Trust Board and the Sir John Logan Campbell Residuary Estate, which selects charities and organisations to receive grants of up to $800,000 annually.
