Nigel Hampton, of Christchurch, CNZM, for services to the law
As a criminal lawyer, Nigel Hampton has been involved with many high-profile cases, including in relation to the Pike River Royal Commission and the collapse of the CTV building. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel and became the first Disciplinary Commissioner of Counsel before the International Criminal Court. He was elected as an alternate member of the Disciplinary Appeals Board for ICC Counsel. He chairs the Law Society’s National Standards Committee and formerly chaired the New Zealand Law Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. He was Chief Justice of the Kingdom of Tonga. He is a judicial officer for World Rugby; South African, New Zealand and Australian Rugby; and New Zealand Rugby. He chairs the Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum Trust, and is a KidsCan Board member and patron of the Howard League.
