Mr Kostantinos Kothroulas
On the morning of Monday the 27th of November 2017, seventy-two year old Kostantinos Kothroulas heard a violent incident unfolding between two men in a neighbouring property.
One man was using a kitchen knife to attack his flatmate, who was shielding himself and screaming for help. Mr Kothroulas attempted to enter the property, and when the flatmate was able to unlock the door, Mr Kothroulas entered and attempted to get the offender into a bear-hug.
As the offender was much younger than Mr Kothroulas, he was able to push the older man away.
Mr Kothroulas called emergency services and then intervened again, this time successfully, enabling the victim to escape.
Mr Kothroulas showed great courage in staying at the scene until the emergency services arrived. At that point he was able to leave, the offender was arrested and the injured man was taken to hospital suffering from significant injuries.
There was considerable risk for Mr Kothroulas when he confronted a much younger and stronger man who was armed with a weapon. He showed great bravery by intervening in a violent situation and coming to the aid of his neighbour.
Without the intervention of Mr Kothroulas, the injured man would have almost certainly lost his life.
