Tom Rainey, of Christchurch, ONZM, for services to music and music education
Tom Rainey is a multi-instrumentalist who worked at the Ara Institute of Canterbury for 28 years, including time as Head of the Department of Creative Industries.
He was a founding tutor of the Jazz School and Head of the School of Performing Arts. He mentored and taught high-profile musicians and influenced the New Zealand music scenes of the 1990s and 2000s. He has collaborated with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as a conductor, arranger and performer. His arrangements have been performed internationally, including by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Mr Rainey is a Trustee of the New Zealand International Jazz and Blues Festival and the Christchurch Jazz Foundation, Chair of the Andromeda Arts Trust, and Treasurer of the Christchurch School of Music Council.
