Mr Leo Donnelly, of Auckland, ONZM, for services to karate
Mr Leo Donnelly has been involved with Karate New Zealand for 46 years as a participant, coach, administrator and mentor. He was Secretary-General of the National Federation and National President of Karate New Zealand. He is Chair of Karate Auckland and General Secretary of the Oceania Karate Federation, and was General Secretary of the Commonwealth Karate Federation. He drafted the constitutions of Karate New Zealand, the Oceania Karate Federation, and the Commonwealth Karate Federation. He helped establish and maintain relationships with Sport New Zealand and its predecessors. He oversaw a significant improvement in the relationship with the Australian Karate Federation. He founded Victoria University’s Goju Ryu Karate Club. He established the New Zealand Universities Karate Council. Mr Donnelly has coached for 45 years in Wellington, the Kapiti Coast and Auckland.
