Christopher Aubrey's Taranaki
Not much is known about artist Christopher Aubrey, who spent time in New Zealand in the late 1800s painting landscapes of the places he visited. He later vanished from New Zealand without a trace, leaving behind many romanticised portraits of colonial Aotearoa. Puke Ariki is home to several of his works depicting colonial Taranaki, but the paintings were not a truly accurate representation of the realities of life back then.
