Mr George Flavell, QSM, of Waiuku, for services to Māori culture and heritage preservation
George Flavell (Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua) has identified, recorded and documented sites which are of special significance to Ngāti Te Ata, ensuring the appropriate management of the cultural sites and taonga, and providing educational resources for the iwi and future generations. He also educates and informs property owners, councils and the public of the importance of Māori cultural sites. He has worked with the Franklin, Auckland and Waikato District Councils to provide guidance and advice. Mr Flavell has documented significant historical sites across the Awhitu Peninsula and was involved in the Mahanihani restoration at the tip of the peninsula.
