Mr Chris Maclean, of Waikanae, ONZM, for services to conservation and publishing
Chris Maclean is founder of The Whitcombe Press. He has written 15 books, including studies of Kāpiti and Waikanae, a history of the Tararua Range, and his co-authored book ‘Tramping: A New Zealand History’. His publications are regarded as authoritative resources and he has ensured that tangata whenua perspectives are consulted on and included. He has been active in conservation and environmental activities, including dune restoration work at Waikanae Beach and wetland restoration in Queen Elizabeth Park (QEP), between Paekākāriki and Raumati South. He coordinates provision of native trees from local environmental companies in addition to organising and undertaking physical planting work. Mr Maclean liaises with the Department of Conservation, Wellington Regional Council, scientists, park rangers and other interested parties on the QEP initiative.
