Mr Nicky Hager, of Wellington, ONZM, for services to investigative journalism
Nicky Hager is one of New Zealand’s leading investigative journalists. He has published seven books from his research, covering intelligence networks, environmental issues, the military and politics, with the common aim of holding power to account. His work has led to government inquiries and has helped establish case law protecting journalists’ right to protect sources. His investigation into Operation Burnham was instrumental in the Office of the Inspector-General of Defence being established to provide oversight over New Zealand’s military forces. He was the first New Zealander to become a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalism. He has contributed to journalism training providers nationally and helped establish the New Zealand Centre for Investigative Journalism. Mr Hager is a member of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security’s Reference Group.
