Sir Charles was the son of Sir James Fergusson, former Governor of New Zealand, and was born in 1865. Sir Charles was educated at Eton and Sandhurst before joining the Grenadier Guards.
He served in the Sudan campaigns under Kitchener. He was Adjutant-General from 1900 to 1903. He was Major-General commanding 5th Division, Irish Command from 1912 to 1914. He commanded the 2nd and 17th Army Groups in France.
Sir Charles was unsuccessful in his bid to enter Parliament in 1923. After his term in New Zealand, he became chairman of the West Indies Closer Union Commission.
From 1937 until his death in 1951, he was Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire.
