Born in 1821, Sir George graduated with an MA from Oxford in 1847. He became President of the University of Corfu in 1847, a position he held for four years.
He was appointed as Governor of New Zealand having served as the first Governor of Queensland. At the completion of his time in New Zealand he successively served as governor of Victoria, Mauritius and Hong Kong.
Sir George retired in 1887 and was appointed chairman of the Royal Commission on new Constitution for Malta the same year.
He died in 1899.
