Born in 1893, Sir Charles Willoughby Moke Norrie was educated at Eton and Sandhurst.
He became a regular soldier and served in both World Wars. In 1943, he rose to the rank of Commander of the Royal Armoured Corps.
He was Governor of South Australia for seven years before taking up office in New Zealand. He was created Baron Norrie of Wellington, New Zealand, and of Upton, Gloucester in 1957, after returning to England.
He was Chancellor of the Order of St Michael and St George from 1960 to 1968. He died in 1977.
