Mr Jim Schuster, of Rotorua, ONZM, for services to Māori arts and heritage preservation
Jim Schuster (Te Arawa, Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Hinekura, Tuhourangi, Ngāti Wahiao, Ngāti Tarawhai, Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Umutahi) is an expert in Māori conservation techniques and a specialist carver, kowhaiwhai painter and tukutuku weaver. He taught at schools throughout the Bay of Plenty. He is a Māori Built Heritage Advisor – Traditional Arts for Heritage New Zealand. He has helped restore numerous marae and wharenui. He is kaitiaki of all three overseas whare whakairo (carved houses). He contributed to the agreed return of the Hinemihi Meeting House in England to New Zealand. He led restoration of the Rauru Meeting House in Für Völkerkunde Museum in Hamburg. He helped create tukutuku panels for the United Nations General Assembly Building in New York. Mr Schuster is part of numerous land and ahu whenua trusts.
