Distinguished Professor Gaven Martin, of Albany, CNZM for services to mathematics and education
Distinguished Professor Gaven Martin has solved some of mathematics’ most challenging problems. His advocacy has strengthened the New Zealand curriculum, and his mentorship has helped shape the next generation of mathematicians. He is co-founder and Director of the New Zealand Mathematical Research Institute and former Director of the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Study. He has held appointments at prestigious international institutions. He has authored or co-authored several influential books. His publications, such as ‘Introduction to the Theory of Quasiconformal Mappings’ and ‘Analysis on Fractals’, have deepened understanding of complex mathematical structures. As Chair of the expert education panel for the Royal Society Te Apārangi, Professor Martin produced a report with recommendations for ensuring mathematics education in New Zealand remains rigorous, relevant and accessible.
