Dr Audrey Tan, MNZM for services to mathematics education
Dr Audrey Tan took a firm stance against the New Zealand Numeracy Development Project, arguing that it weakened fundamental skills. She subsequently served as a member of the NCEA Numeracy Subject Expert Group. She was appointed to the Ministerial Advisory Group to review the English and Mathematics and Statistics learning areas in the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum. Her work is reflected in the growing national adoption of structured teaching methods through the refreshed Mathematics and Statistics curriculum for Years 0 to 8. Dr Tan founded Mathmo Consulting, through which she has provided professional development to schools, delivered classroom teaching, and mentored students directly.
