Distinguished Professor Emeritus Paul Spoonley, of Auckland, ONZM for services to sociology
Distinguished Professor Emeritus Paul Spoonley held various roles with Massey University, including as Academic Director and Distinguished Professor of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, fostering relationships with local authorities and the community. He was Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Co-Director of the National Centre for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism. He sat on the Independent Panel of New Zealand Police’s “Understanding Policing Delivery” and chaired the Research Management Committee. He was a Marsden Fund Council member and chaired the Social Sciences Panel. He has published 29 books and hundreds of academic articles. Professor Spoonley is a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Germany, and a Fellow and Board member of Auckland Museum.
