Professor Glyn Harper
Professor Glyn Harper, of Palmerston North, received the Queen's Service Medal, for services to historical research. Professor Harper is a military historian and Professor of War Studies. He was the Director of Massey University’s Centre for Defence and Security Studies for eight years and is now General Editor of the Centenary History of New Zealand and the First World War. He has published 16 books on New Zealand military history, specialising in the activities of the New Zealand Division in France during World War I, Victoria Cross recipients, and New Zealand commanders. He was the New Zealand Army’s official historian to its deployment to East Timor between 1999 and 2001 and co-authored Operation East Timor. Some of his other works include Massacre at Passchendaele: The New Zealand Story and Images of War: A Photographic Record of New Zealanders at War 1914-1918. Professor Harper has also written children’s books on war and regularly speaks to community organisations.
