Ms Christine Orchard, QSM, Auckland.
For services to medicine. Ms Christine Orchard has been a cardiac nurse for more than 30 years, providing support for children born with congenital heart defects at Green Lane and Starship Children’s Hospitals. She has been the Custodian of Green Lane Heart Registry since 2003. She established the position in the wake of revelations that a large number of babies’, childrens' and adults' hearts had been collected in the Registry without their families’ knowledge or consent. Over the course of several years she took responsibility for resolving this, often working in her evenings and weekends to do so. She spent time delivering hearts back to families, and counselling them. Since 2002 Ms Orchard has used her annual leave to volunteer as Camp Nurse at Camp Brave Hearts, a week-long camp for 8 to twelve year olds with heart disease.
