Tanya Jenkins, Christchurch, QSM, for services to conservation
Ms Tanya Jenkins has been involved in the conservation of the marine and coastal environment in the Canterbury region for more than 15 years. She is a founding member of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary/Ihutai Trust. She introduced the Seaweek environmental education initiative to Canterbury, which has spread to other regions around New Zealand. She is a founding member of Marine Watch New Zealand and the Charlesworth Reserve Volunteer Maintenance Group. She instigated the StepUp Canterbury EcoExpo in 2008, and organised the first annual ‘Farewell to the Godwits’ ceremony in Christchurch. She ran road shows for West Coast and Canterbury schools and communities from 1994 to 2004, focusing on a different environmental topic each year. Ms Jenkins has been a Civil Defence volunteer for 12 years and helped establish emergency welfare centres in Linwood and Aranui following the Christchurch earthquakes.
