Craig McGregor, QSM, Christchurch
For services to education. Mr Craig McGregor, who retired in 2011, was the Principal of Wharenui Primary School, a low decile school in Christchurch with a multi-ethnic roll. He has worked to establish strong connections with the wider Christchurch community, in particular the Māori, Chinese and Pacific communities, including running evening and weekend Chinese language classes, and cultural programmes. He has ensured that all children receive fruit at the morning tea break and are encouraged to participate in physical education and sports. He has encouraged the school to become environmentally friendly, implementing the Enviro-Schools programme. Mr McGregor has encouraged inquiry-based learning and the use of information technology to aid the learning of children from low-income families.
