Jan Anderson, Queenstown, QSM, for services to education
Mrs Jan Anderson has been Principal of Otago Girls’ High School since 1995, retiring in 2012, and has been involved in secondary education for more than 40 years. She has been progressive in encouraging the adoption of new technology and innovative teaching methods. For more than 10 years she was on the management committee of London House and the Phoenix Centre, an off-site educational facility that supports students from all Dunedin secondary schools. She has had a long involvement with both the Secondary Principals’ Association of New Zealand, and the Otago Secondary Principals’ Association. She was a member of the Literacy Reference Group and the Retirement Commission. From 2007 to 2010 she was a member of the International Successful School Principalship Project, funded through Nottingham University. Mrs Anderson is seen as an example of exceptional educational leadership.
