Professor Michael (Mike) Ardagh, ONZM, Christchurch
For services to emergency medicine. Professor Mike Ardagh is the National Clinical Director of Emergency Department Services with the Ministry of Health, and was the first Professor of Emergency Medicine in New Zealand. He is a Specialist Emergency Physician at the Christchurch Hospital Emergency Department and Hospital as well as a Professor with the University of Otago, Christchurch. He has advocated on the issue of patient over-crowding in emergency departments with Chief Executive Officers of Health Boards, managers, the Ministry of Health and the emergency medicine community. His research interests include Emergency Department crowding and systems, diagnostic decision tools and the ethics of emergency medicine, particularly resuscitation. He was a member of the Ministry of Health Working Group that published ‘Achieving Quality in Emergency Departments’ in 2008. Professor Ardagh has been keynote speaker at a number of conferences both nationally and internationally, and has received awards and distinctions for both his teaching and research.
