Professor John Shaw, Auckland, ONZM, for services to the health sector
Professor John Shaw has made a strong contribution to the education of New Zealand pharmacists and international undergraduates and is held in high regard by the medical profession. He has taught at all three Schools of Pharmacy in New Zealand, first at the Central Institute of Technology at Heretaunga, then the University of Otago, before becoming Founding Head of the School at the University of Auckland. He was an advisor to the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand Working Party from 1992 to 1998. He has been an advisor to the Australian College of Pharmacy Practice since 1991, a member of the Ministry of Health’s New Prescribers Advisory Committee since 2001, and an appointed member of the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand since its inception in 2003. Professor Shaw was an early proponent of pharmacist prescribing rights in New Zealand. He is currently involved as the principal investigator in a new Community Pharmacist Anticoagulation Service, a world-leading initiative involving 15 pharmacies. Professor Shaw delivered the distinguished Peter Gluckman Lecture in 2011. He has received numerous awards including the New Zealand College of Pharmacists Inaugural Peter Coville Award and the Peter Gluckman Medal, both in 2011.
