Dr John Simpson, MNZM, Wellington.
For services to medicine. Mr John Simpson has a strong interest and considerable expertise in breast surgery and has assisted in the development of the ‘Guidelines for the Surgical Treatment of Breast Cancer in New Zealand’. His main locus of clinical work was at Hutt Hospital, where he became the Medical Director for Surgery and established the Breast Service for the Wellington region. As a surgeon he established a number of procedures, including immediate breast reconstruction following a mastectomy, and the use of ultrasound as part of a clinical examination. He was Deputy Chair of the Court of Examiners for Australia and New Zealand and foundation Chair of the New Zealand Association of General Surgeons. He has provided advice and assistance to government bodies, including the Health and Disability Commissioner. Mr Simpson was made a Life Member of the New Zealand Association of General Surgeons in 2005.
