Padma Vibhushan
At a ceremony hosted by the Governor-General, Hon Anand Satyanand, at Government House Auckland on 22 May, the Indian Government honoured the late Sir Edmund Hillary by posthumously awarding him one of its highest honours, the Padma Vibhushan. Because Sir Edmund died on 11 January 2008, just before the announcement of the award, it was presented to Lady Hillary by the Minister of Commerce & Industry for the Government of India, Mr Kamal Nath, who is visiting New Zealand.
