Sir John Graham, Auckland, KNZM
For services to education and sport. Sir John was Headmaster of Auckland Grammar School from 1973 to 1993 and Chancellor of the University of Auckland from 1999 to 2005. For 25 years he has been a member of the Woolf Fisher Trust, which provides educational scholarships. He is a Director of the Academic Colleges Group of New Zealand and was the founder of the Maxim Institute, a public policy think tank, which he directed from 2001 to 2009. He has been an All Black Captain, and was President of the New Zealand Rugby Union from 2005 to 2007. He has been a champion for initiatives that benefit women’s rugby. As President of the New Zealand Rugby Foundation, Sir John has worked to assist seriously injured rugby players. He was manager of the New Zealand Men’s Cricket Team, and the Black Caps, and has been a board member of the Auckland Cricket Association since 2000. He was Chair of the Ministerial Task Force on Sport, Fitness and Leisure, was a member of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation and was appointed as a commissioner at Nga Tapuwae College (now Southern Cross Campus). Dr Graham has been the Chair of Parents Inc since 1995. He has previously received the insignia of a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
