Lawrence Metcalf
Lawrence Metcalf, of Richmond, received the Insignia of a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for services to horticulture. Mr Metcalf has contributed to horticulture and conservation for more than 50 years. He served as a curator at a number of botanic gardens, parks, and reserves in Christchurch and Southland. He has written extensively on horticulture and its history, including A History of The Christchurch Botanic Gardens, New Zealand Trees and Shrubs, and The Cultivation of New Zealand Plants. He has written horticultural handbooks, including A Photographic Guide to Trees of New Zealand and Know Your New Zealand Native Plants. He is convenor of the nomenclature committee, President of the Canterbury Botanical Society, and a member of the International Dendrology Society. He chairs the Recreation Advisory Committee for the local government training board and is the Otago-Southland board representative for the New Zealand Institute of Parks and Recreation Administration. Mr Metcalf lectures at Lincoln University and helped to establish a degree in parks and recreation administration.
