Dr John Matthews, of Remuera
Dr John Matthews received the Insignia of a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for services to medicine and the community. Dr Matthews has a long record of service to medicine, education and the community. In 25 years' teaching at Auckland University, he has taught many of the haematologists practicing in New Zealand. In 1994 he was a founding trustee and later Chair of the Auckland Medical School Foundation, and was a member of the University of Auckland Council from 2003 to 2006. He continues to be involved in this organisation and is a trustee of the University of Auckland Foundation. From 1994 to 2006 he was a Director and later Chairperson of Southern Cross Healthcare Group. He was closely involved in the early years of the highly successful Uniservices Ltd, formed by Auckland University to develop commercial enterprises out of academic activities. Dr Matthews was also Chairperson of DNA Diagnostics and Proacta, and played a key role in the establishment of what is now Diagnostic Medlab.
