Professor Samuel (Stuart) McNaughton, Auckland, ONZM
For services to education. Professor McNaughton has been Director of the Woolf Fisher Research Centre since 1998, and Professor of Education at the University of Auckland since 2000. His research and teaching interests are in developmental and educational psychology, with a focus on the development of language and literacy. His most recent publication, ‘Meeting of Minds’ (1995) develops theory and provides examples of effective literacy instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse children. As Director of the Woolf Fisher Centre he is responsible for a programme of research-based interventions for education and schooling success in South Auckland. The Centre also conducts research of language and literacy in early education centres and into bilingual children’s development, as well as working to raise the literacy of Māori and Pacific students in secondary schools. Professor McNaughton has been a member of the government-appointed Literacy Taskforce, was Chair of the New Zealand Literacy Experts Group, and is a member of the Chief Science Advisor’s working group on adolescence.
