Sir Murray Halberg and Rob Fenwick
Two members of the Waiheke Island community received high honours on 24 September. Sir Murray Halberg, right, received New Zealand's highest honour, the Order of New Zealand for his dedicated service to athletics and charity work spanning more than 50 years. Sir Murray won the gold medal in 5000m at the 1960 Olympic Games and was named Sportsman of the Year in 1958. Since retiring from sport he established the Halberg Trust which works to ensure people with disabilities can participate in sport and recreation. Sir Murray received the Badge formerly worn by the late Sir Edmund Hillary. Rob Fenwick, left, received the Insignia of a Companion of the NZ Order of Merit for services to conservation and the community. Mr Fenwick is the founder of Living Earth Ltd, New Zealand’s principal organic waste and composting operator, and a founding member of the Council for Sustainable Development. A trustee of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature for 15 years, he has represented New Zealand at international conservation conferences overseas and is chairman of the Antarctic Heritage Trust.
