Desmond Townson
Desmond Townson, of Manukau, received the Insignia of a Member of the NZ Order of Merit on 25 September 2008. Due to ill health, the Governor-General, Hon Anand Satyanand, hosted the ceremony at Mr Townson's home. Mr Townson is a prominent New Zealand yachtsman, yacht designer, and yacht maker who has made a significant contribution to the yachting industry in New Zealand for over 50 years. He has produced over 75 different designs many of which are still used for racing and recreational yachting. Among his more popular designs is the Starling, which has been used for racing and recreation for over four decades and all of the royalties from which go to the Glendowie Boating Club. The Governor-General and Mrs Susan Satyanand are pictured with Mr Townson and members of his family after the ceremony.
