Carol Shand
Dr Carol Shand, of Wellington, received the Insignia of a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to women’s health, on 5 September. Dr Shand has been working for and with victims of sexual assault and child sexual abuse and in the fields of women’s health and sexual health medicine for more than 40 years. She has conducted pioneering work in establishing sexual abuse care and co-authored the standard textbooks on these subjects. She was a member of the National Advisory Committee on the prevention of Child Abuse Working Party and is a founding trustee of the Wellington Sexual Assault HELP Foundation. She is a past president of the Wellington Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society and the Australasian College of Sexual Health Physicians, of which she became a Fellow in 1997.
