James Cherrington
Mr James Cherrington, of Kaikohe, received the Queen's Service Medal for services to Maori and the community. Mr Cherrington has been immersed in the Kaikohe community for more than 35 years. He was President of the Opononi Rugby Club for many years. He was instrumental in the development of the Waiotemarama Cooperative Sports Complex. He chaired the Opononi Area School Senior Maori Culture Group and was a member of the Board of the Opononi Area School. He chaired the South Hokianga Co-operative Church Committee Parish (Maori Section), the Waimamaku Maori Committee and was president of the local historical society. He was President of the South Hokianga Maori Executive and the Tai Tokerau District Council. Mr Cherrington is Chairman of the Hauora Hokianga Enterprise Trust and received a National Education Service Award in 1998.
