The late Professor Terry Healy, of Hamilton
The late Professor Terry Healy received the Insignia of a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to science (Professor Healy’s insignia was received by his wife, Mrs Judy-Ann Healy). Professor Healy had an internationally distinguished career in coastal sedimentation and engineering, gaining prestigious awards from Japan, Germany, China and the United States. He lead a strong team of researchers in the University of Waikato’s Department of Earth and Ocean Science, where his research included the environmental aspects of dredging and ports, coastal erosion, tsunami research and the impact of sea level rise due to climate change. Along with collaborators from Germany’s MARUM Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences he established the Integrated Coastal Zone and Shelf-Sea Research Centre, a multi-million dollar centre for marine research in Tauranga. Professor Healy worked with a number of regional and district councils, and port companies, especially the Port of Tauranga, on the practical applications of his research.
